Dolphins are mammals which live in the oceans, They are beautiful, graceful, elegant creatures. Many scientists find that dolphins are very intelligent, they have their own form of communication. Clicks, chattering and body language are just some of the ways they "talk".
There are many varieties of dolphins; Dusky dolphins, Bottlenose, pink dolphins, pilot whales and of course the Orca, are only a few to be named here.
Male bottle nose dolphins will hold females hostage. Dolphins are one of nature’s animals which mate for other reasons besides simply reproductive and to produce offspring (according to “ Nature: Dolphins” a PBS special).
Dolphins
are very gregarious, social creatures, when they jump and spin they are actually communicating. Dolphins have also helped people by saving them. On the other hand, a few years ago, there were news reports in Egypt a few dolphins attacked humans. They are wild creatures.Dolphins have an another interesting hunting strategy according to a show on Nat Geo Wild called "The Dark Side: Dolphins,"when they are in huge pods usually when they are hunting sardines. They circle the sardines to bunch them tighter and tighter, at this time sometimes sharks and birds join the fray. Another
hunting strategy is to beach themselves in order to capture prey.Orcas use another strategy; they are the wolf pack of the seas. They have been known to play with their prey. They will eat anything; however their favorite food is seal. Orcas live in groups called pods. Which is usually led by a female.
There is also the Boto dolphin which lives in the Amazon river. They do not have very good eyesight, and have adapted to fresh water environment. I have never had the pleasure of seeing dolphins in the wild, I would really like to.
Dolphins are very popular attractions at water parks such as; Sea World, Florida and Texas boast of having the most popular aquatic animal attractions. Spectators come from all over to see the shows the dolphins and killer whales put on along with the humans. Shamu was the most popular killer whale. In some cultures dolphins represent good luck and prosperity. I think they are just very magnificent creatures.
