I must admit that I like fairy tales and folklore, I owned a book called “Children’s Book of Treasured Tales” 1973 version, which contained many of the known fairy tales however, not the Disney versions. Apparently, I am not the only person who likes fairy tales; there certainly seems to be an explosion of these shows coming to tv and movies, however I am not certain I like the way that certain movie makers have been turning the fairy tales into feature length movies.
Starting with Kristen Stewart as Snow White in “Snow White and the Huntsman” now the more recentinstallment of Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk (Jack the Giant Slayer) are in theatres. These films are more in the action adventure genre rather than true family films.
They seem to be very popular on tv as well. “Once Upon A Time” which is a show on ABC, is actually kind of cute. This show is about a town called Storybook, Maine where many of the charactersof known fairy tales have been stranded on this world. They now have their magic back thanks to Emma and Henry, two of the maincharacters.
“Grimm” is another tv show which is based on fairy tales and folklore that does seem to be popular. Of the two I like “Once Upon A Time” better.
They have also recently brought “Oz The Great And Powerful” to the screen starring James Franco as the Wizard of Oz. This movie was a high grossing film over this weekend.
I do wonder why so many people are still captivated by these shows although they have been updated and revamped. I like them because I like folklore. Although I have to say that I do not always like these newer versions. There still are DVD versions of the children’s animated classics which have been shown as feature films. Such as “Cinderella,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” “Sleeping Beauty” ( which is my favorite), and “Beauty and The Beast”.
What do you think of these and the plethora of new movies based on classics.
